Flame sprayed polymer coatings have been recently developed as anti-icing surfaces on metallic surfaces. Typically, the substrates used in previous works have been solid structure, or they have had a limited surface porosity. However, here our research involves the development of flame sprayed polyethylene coatings on porous substrates of stainless steel produced by a metal injection molding (MIM). Benefits of this technology are connected to lighter structures, rigid and complex shapes, which enable their use in various applications, e.g., in aerospace and automotive industries. To expand the use in harsh cold conditions, icephobic coatings were developed on these porous structures. This research investigates the interfacial properties of flame sprayed polymer coatings on the porous metallic substrate and evaluates ice adhesion of the surfaces. Coating-substrate adhesion was measured using a customized peel adhesion test whereas ice adhesion strength was evaluated using centrifugal ice adhesion test (CAT) and pushing ice adhesion test (PAT) in the cold conditions (-10 °C) using mixed-glaze ice accreted in Icing Wind Tunnel (IWiT). In addition, detailed analyses include microstructural, topographical and wetting characterization as a part of anti-icing properties assessment.
