The increased use of additive manufacturing techniques for depositing functional layers and repairing worn components has drawn attention to the critical role of substrate – deposit bond strength. Unfortunately, the conventional glue-based tensile pull-off tests are limited by the cohesive strength of the adhesive. Moreover, the interfaces are rarely under pure tensile stress during their service life. For example, abrasion resistant coatings usually experience a combination of shear and compression. This paper presents a new test method specifically designed to evaluate adhesion strength under mixed shear/compression loading providing a more realistic assessment of the bonding strength of abrasion resistant coatings. The effectiveness is demonstrated through a case study on cold-spray coated cast iron brake discs developed for automotive braking systems.
