Suspension thermal spray technique offers many advantages, e.g., it allows the use of nanopowders and creates special microstructures which are beneficial for producing superhydrophobic coatings. However, this method requires more heat than conventional spraying because part of the heat is consumed to evaporate the solvent (water or alcohol) in the suspension. Usually, suspension thermal spraying has been done by HVOF and plasma, but flame spraying offers cheaper and easier thermal spray processing setup and can be used as suspension flame spraying (S-FS) as well. Therefore, this study focuses on process parameters and their effect on adhesion properties of S-FS coatings.
In this study, S-FS was used to apply superhydrophobic TiO2-based coatings on the surface. Furthermore, flame sprayed Al2O3 interlayer was applied to improve adhesion between substrate and S-FS TiO2 coatings. After this step, different traverse speeds and spray distances were carried out in order to modify the structural building up of coatings. It was observed that both adhesion and cohesion improved by applying the intermediate layer. Also, by using different process parameters, coating structure can be changed.
